From Chords to Confidence

Beginner's Path is a 12-week guided journey for complete beginners and aspiring spirit-led musicians who are ready to build real lasting musical foundations, establish a sustainable daily practice, and begin sharing music with confidence.

I'm Benny Oyama, at your service.

Welcome! So happy you've made it here.

I created Beginner's Path because I see the light in so many people who carry songs and prayers in their hearts, and are in need of the foundation and rigor to make their music manifest in the world. To become the kind of person music flows through; to become a medicine musician.

It's a joy to share 20+ years of experience in my musical and spiritual studies with various masters with the community. My mission is to genuinely help you develop a strong, meaningful practice with the guitar, voice, and buffalo drum through careful, precise study of 10 medicine songs over the course of the immersion.

Looking forward to guiding you and creating with you, with love, devotion and service.

Alternatively, Medicine Music 12 Week Immersion is for you if:

You have already prepared the basic open chords on guitar (C, D, G, Am, Em, Dm, A, and have explored barre chords.).   A few basic strumming patterns and fingerpicking patterns.

You have already started independently to learn to play and sing a few medicine songs and are feeling stagnant/stuck, like you keep repeating the same things over and over again.

You have a vision for the musician you could be but are consistently facing a lack of confidence and struggle to maintain a disciplined practice. You're ready to learn for real.

What it's like working with me

"I honestly loved working with Benny. I really appreciated his humor, his lightness, and also his ability to keep showing up authentically while clearly holding a lot behind the scenes.

That felt very inspiring to witness. I could really feel how much work and care and intention went into the container he created for us during 12 weeks. I’m genuinely grateful for that." — Ivana

“It’s been such a valuable lesson, and to have this group, even this small group, and you Benny, has been huge for me. It’s been amazing just to have that little bit of dialogue and to be able to talk about it. Even just meeting on Sundays and doing that has really helped." — Matt

"You just need one person to be ignited to feel the inspiration and ignite yourself. Like when you see the spirited person, the fire spreads, right?

And for me, I’ve really felt it and seen so many spirited people. It helped me go back and feel my own fire.”

— Tamara

"I've just been reflecting on how grateful I am for this opportunity that we've had to build a real relationship with this instrument and this music, and such a consistent and eager daily practice that I've never had before.

Even when I studied a different instrument for almost a decade, I never felt that sense of connection, devotion to my daily practice.”‍ ‍— Brad

“As to what we call music in everyday language, to me architecture is music, gardening is music, farming is music, painting is music, poetry is music.”
